According to the Oxford Dictionary a portrait is "an artistic representation of a person, especially one depicting only the face or head and shoulders." My definition is not quite as narrow...I believe a good portrait is one that captures the essence of a person's character. This may be a head and shoulders shot looking directly into the lens, or it may be something more candid without any eye contact. Smiles, laughs, gestures and expressions are unique to individuals and this is what I strive to capture when I create portraits.
